How the Hijri calendar works

The Hijri (Islamic) calendar is lunar. Each month begins with the new crescent moon and lasts 29 or 30 days, so a year of 12 months has 354 or 355 days. That is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, which is why Ramadan and the Eids arrive about 11 days earlier each year and move through every season over roughly 33 years.

Years are counted from the Hijra, the Prophet's ﷺ migration from Makkah to Madinah in 622 CE. They are written with “AH” (Anno Hegirae, “in the year of the Hijra”).

Why the date can differ by one day

This converter uses the Umm al-Qura calendar, the official calendar of Saudi Arabia, which is calculated in advance. Saudi Arabia uses it for official and administrative dates, but even there the start of Ramadan and the Eids is announced after a moon sighting, which can differ from Umm al-Qura by a day. Many communities around the world also begin each month with a local sighting of the crescent moon, and some follow other astronomical criteria. Because the moon may be visible in one place a day before another, the Hijri date where you live can be one day earlier or later than shown here.

For the start of Ramadan, the Eids and other dates of worship, please follow your local mosque or Islamic center.

The Hijri calendar and Zakat

Zakat is due once a lunar year has passed on wealth at or above the Nisab. Because the lunar year is about 11 days shorter, your Zakat anniversary moves about 11 days earlier on the Gregorian calendar each year. The Zakat date finder above works this out for you. Some people pay on a fixed Gregorian date instead. Our How We Calculate page explains how some scholars adjust the rate in that case.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert a Gregorian date to a Hijri date?

Enter the Gregorian date in the converter on this page and it shows the matching Hijri date, using the Umm al-Qura calendar. To go the other way, choose the Hijri day, month and year and it shows the Gregorian date.

Why does the Hijri date sometimes differ by one day?

Each Islamic month begins with the sighting of the new crescent moon. Saudi Arabia's Umm al-Qura calendar, used by this converter, is calculated in advance, while many communities begin months by local moon sighting or by other astronomical criteria. As a result, the date where you live may be one day earlier or later.

How many days are in a Hijri year?

A Hijri year has 12 lunar months of 29 or 30 days each, for a total of 354 or 355 days. That is about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year, so Islamic dates move about 11 days earlier each year.

When is Ramadan 2027?

According to the Umm al-Qura calendar, Ramadan 1448 AH is expected to begin on Monday, February 8, 2027, and Eid al-Fitr is expected on Tuesday, March 9, 2027. The actual dates depend on moon sighting and may differ by a day.

How do I find my Zakat date?
